Undaria pinnatifida (Wakame): A Seaweed with Pharmacological Properties
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: The life-style-related diseases, like hypertension and obesity is a global tendency. To prevent these diseases, researchers’ attention is increasingly focusing on pharmacological properties of some natural plants such as Undaria pinnatifida (wakame), the most widely eaten brown seaweed. Phytochemical studies of this seaweed exhibited the existence of many biologically active compounds, such as proteins, polysaccharide, fucoxanthin, macro and trace elements, as well as physiologically important fatty acids. Objective: This study reviews the main reports of the pharmacological properities of Undaria pinnatifida (wakame). Conclusion: The pharmacological active compounds of Undaria pinnatifida can be useful for the nutritional requirement of humans and may be beneficial in human health.

Degradation of the seaweed wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) by a composting process with the inoculation of Bacillus sp. HR6.
Disposal of the seaweed wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) by inoculating the halotolerant bacterium Bacillus sp. HR6 was examined in an experimental scale composting system. Strain HR6 was effective in initiating the composting process of wakame, and there was a rapid increase in temperature to over 54.9-55.7 degrees C after 18-20 h. The composting process of wakame could be carried out despite a hi...

This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity (total antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities) of seaweeds commercially available in the Malaysian supermarket. Four types of seaweeds namely Nori (Porphyra sp.), Kumbu (Laminaria sp.), Wakame (Undaria sp.) and Hijiki (Hijikia sp.) were used in the study. The extracts were prepared with water and ethanol, respectively. The b-ca...

Long-term suppression of postprandial glucose concentration is an important dietary strategy for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Because previous reports have suggested that seaweed may exert anti-diabetic effects in animals, the effects of Wakame or Mekabu intake with 200 g white rice, 50 g boiled soybeans, 60 g potatoes, and 40 g broccoli on postprandial glucose, insulin and ...

Carotenoids have been shown to have beneficial health effects such as pro-vitamin A activity, immune response modulation and anti carcinogenic activity. People consuming diets rich in carotenoids from natural foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are healthier and have lower mortality from a number of chronic illnesses. We examined the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity and antihypertensive effect of the hot water extract of wakame, Undaria pinnatifida. Ten dipeptides were isolated from the extract by several steps of chromatography, and their amino acid sequences were Tyr-His, Lys-Trp, Lys-Tyr, Lys-Phe, Phe-Tyr, Val-Trp, Val-Phe, Ile-Tyr, Ile-Trp, and Val-Tyr. Both single administration...
